Oregon CPE Requirements

Pacific Northwest Tax School group-live (classroom) and group-internet (webinar) programs meet Oregon CPE requirements. Final authority for CPE rests with the Oregon Board of Accountancy. It is the responsibility of each CPA to verify whether CPE programs and sponsors meet Oregon Board requirements. A summary of CPE requirements and website link for the Board is provided below.

Renewal Period: Even-numbered permits expire on June 30 of even-numbered years and odd-numbered permits expire on June 30 of odd-numbered years.

Sponsor information: With the exception of the required Ethics course, the Oregon Board of Accountancy does not pre-approve CPE sponsors. In order to qualify for CPE credit under these rules, a CPE program must be a formal program of learning that contributes directly to the professional competence of the licensee. It is the obligation of each licensee to select a course of study that contributes to the licensee's professional competence in public accountancy. The licensee may take programs in a variety of topics that are relevant to the licensee's practice.

Program requirements: CPE programs must meet the following requirements to qualify for CPE credit:

  • An outline of the program is prepared in advance and preserved;
  • The program is at least one hour (fifty-minute period) in length;
  • A record of attendance is maintained by the sponsor; evidence of completion is provided to participating licensees;
  • The program is conducted by a qualified instructor whose background, training, education or experience qualifies the person to teach or lead a discussion on the subject matter of the particular program.

CPE Requirements: Each biennial renewal period, certified public accountants and public accountants shall report satisfactory evidence of having completed 80 hours of CPE.

  • At least 24 of the required 80 hours of CPE shall be completed in each year of the renewal period.
  • Hours carried forward from the previous reporting period may not be used to meet the minimum annual requirement
  • A maximum of 20 hours may be carried forward from one reporting period to the next.
  • Except for carry forward hours allowed, CPE hours must be completed during the two-year period immediately preceding the renewal date.

Ethics: Active licensees are required to complete FOUR hours of CPE in Professional Conduct. Ethics with each biennial renewal application.

NEW Active licensees who are applying for renewal for the first time in Oregon are required to complete a program offered by a sponsor registered with the Oregon Board of Accountancy.

Self-Study: Individual study programs, correspondence courses or other individual study programs will qualify for CPE credit if approved by the NASBA Quality Assurance Service (QAS).

Pacific Northwest Tax School is an approved by NASBA as a sponsor of QAS programs.  Courses identified as meeing the QAS standared provide qualifying CPE for Oregon CPAs.

Notice to Members of the National Association of Enrolled Agents: NAEA requires its members to obtain 30 hours of CPE each year. NAEA further requires the CPE be in compliance with IRS guidelines. As an IRS approved sponsor of CPE, our programs meet CPE standards set forth by NAEA.
