Michigan CPE Requirements

Pacific Northwest Tax School programs meet Michigan CPE requirements. Final authority for CPE rests with the Michigan Board of Accountancy. It is the responsibility of each CPA to verify whether CPE programs and sponsors meet Michigan Board requirements. A summary of CPE requirements and website link for the Board is provided below.

Sponsor Information: The Board does not pre-approve programs.

Renewal: A continuing education period begins July 1 and ends June 30. CPE is reported every two years and is due by July 31 of odd numbered years.

Reporting Year: 7/31 biennially

CPE Requirement: 40 hours is required each year. Qualifying continuing education subjects include:

  • Accounting.
  • Auditing.
  • Management advisory services.
  • Information technology.
  • Mathematics, statistics, probability, and quantitative application to business.
  • Economics.
  • Finance.
  • Business law.
  • Business management.
  • Professional ethics for certified public accountants.
  • Taxation.
  • Financial advisory services.
  • Business valuations.
  • Any other subjects which contribute to the professional competency of a licensee and for which the responsibility for compliance rests solely with the licensure applicant or licensee.

A minimum of 8 hours of the annual CPE must be in auditing and accounting, and a minimum of 2 hours must be in ethics.

Ethics: 2 Hours per year. The study of ethics may include, but is not limited to, the study of the code of conduct, ethical reasoning, ethics enforcement, non-attest services, and independence.

Self Study: Self-study programs are permitted. Both the licensee and the school must maintain records of completion for a minimum of 4 years. Credit for a self-study program shall not be more than 50% of the minimum qualifying hours in any continuing education period.

Notice to Members of the National Association of Enrolled Agents: NAEA requires its members to obtain 30 hours of CPE each year. NAEA further requires the CPE be in compliance with IRS guidelines. As an IRS approved sponsor of CPE, our programs meet CPE standards set forth by NAEA.

State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit.
